Thinking about a black patio? Good instinct. Dark stone makes planting look greener, pool water look bluer and a modern house look finished. Here is the catch: these three blacks are not interchangeable. Kota Black, Imperial Black and Antique Black differ in texture, tone, heat and how they age under Ontario sun and road salt. Choose the wrong one and you could end up with a patio that reads grey by its third summer, or a rustic surface you never wanted. This guide compares all three side by side, based on what we see in our Caledon Village yard and on customer projects. You can browse every one of our natural stone colours as you read.
Why Black Natural Stone Is Trending in Ontario Landscapes
Ontario homes have moved toward crisp exteriors: black window frames, white or light grey siding, clean rooflines. Black stone carries that look down to ground level, so the landscape matches the architecture instead of fighting it.
There is a practical side too. Dark paving frames lawns and garden beds sharply, hides everyday dirt better than cream stone, and makes a pool feel like a deliberate design feature rather than a hole in the yard. Black also pairs easily with lighter stone, which lets homeowners use it as an accent if they worry about heat or upkeep.
We cover where colour and design are heading in our look at natural stone trends 2026. Black sits near the top of that list for good reason.

Kota Black at a Glance
Colour, Texture and Finishes
Kota Black is a dense limestone and the deepest shade in our whole collection. Its tone runs from deep grey to black, and unlike many limestones it stays fairly consistent from piece to piece, with the odd darker patch adding character. The surface is smooth, which gives it a clean, contemporary feel underfoot and to the eye.
One trait to know before you buy: Kota Black tends to lighten slightly when it sits in strong, prolonged sun. We recommend sealing it to protect that signature depth.
Best Uses
We supply Kota Black limestone in Ontario as flagstone, steps, coping, pool coping and edge pavers. It suits modern homes, minimalist patios and pool surrounds where you want a sharp, uniform black line. Choose it when consistency matters more than variation. For inspiration, see our Kota Black project examples.
Imperial Black at a Glance
Colour, Texture and Finishes
Imperial Black is a sandstone, and a rare one: it is the only black-toned sandstone that comes out of India. Its base colour is charcoal, broken up with ochre yellow, brown and rustic shades. The surface is clefted and veiny, so it looks established from the day it goes down. It is the closest sandstone we know to the look of reclaimed York stone.
It comes in a natural finish. Flagstone sizes include 12×24, 18×24, 24×24 and 24×36, while steps and coping come in 12, 14 and 16 inch widths and lengths from 4 to 8 feet. If you like the stone but want a different face, ask about Venetian Mist, a finish of Imperial Black.
Best Uses
Imperial Black stone fits traditional, heritage and cottage-style properties: garden paths, stepping stones, steps, wall and pool coping, and edge pavers. Pick it when you want a dark patio that feels warm and lived-in rather than stark.
Antique Black at a Glance
Colour, Texture and Finishes
Antique Black is a limestone with an acid-washed and brushed finish. That process softens the face, giving the stone a gently textured, slightly aged look while keeping a rich, deep colour. It sits between the other two: darker and more uniform than Imperial Black, but less sleek than Kota Black’s smooth surface.
Our first Antique Black installation was a front entryway completed with one of our trusted contractors, Highland Renovation. The finished result showed how this stone adds a bold, refined look without feeling cold.
Best Uses
Antique Black natural stone works well on entryways, front walks and patios close to the house, where the brushed texture is seen up close. It is also available as rebate coping for pools. Choose it for transitional homes that want black stone with a softer, more tactile character.

Do Black Stones Get Hot in Summer?
Yes. Dark stone absorbs more sunlight than light stone, so any black paver will feel warmer underfoot on a bright July afternoon than ivory or beige sandstone in the same spot. That applies to all three stones here; colour drives heat far more than stone type.
It does not rule black out. Many of our customers keep black stone as a border or coping and lay a lighter stone across the main deck where people walk barefoot. Others use black in shaded areas, on north or east sides of the house, or on front walks where shoes are the norm. A quick rinse with the hose cools any stone fast.
Before deciding, put a sample outside in full sun for an afternoon and stand on it.
Will Black Stone Fade? Sealing and Sun Exposure
Some black stone lightens with time, and Kota Black is the one to watch. Because it absorbs so much sunlight, a fully exposed south or west facing patio can drift toward grey if left unprotected. That is why we recommend sealing Kota Black.
A colour-enhancing sealer deepens the tone and helps hold it there. Reapply on the schedule the sealer manufacturer gives, and sooner if water stops beading on the surface.
Imperial Black’s mix of charcoal, ochre and brown means gradual weathering is less obvious; it simply reads as more character. Antique Black already has a softened, aged face from its brushed finish, but sealing still helps keep its colour rich.
Design Pairings: Black Borders, Pool Coping and Light Sandstone Contrast
Black stone is at its best next to something lighter. Three pairings we see work again and again:
- Black borders around a light patio. Run Kota Black or Imperial Black edge pavers around an Ivory or Beige sandstone field. The border frames the space and keeps the walking surface cooler.
- Black pool coping with lighter decking. Our natural stone coping comes in all three blacks, and a dark coping line sharpens the pool edge beautifully.
- Black steps into a grey patio. Dark treads give each step a clear visual edge, which helps safety as well as style.

Cleaning and Winter Care for Black Stone
Routine cleaning is simple: sweep often, rinse with a garden hose, and use a pH-neutral stone cleaner with a soft brush for marks. Avoid acidic products, especially on Kota Black and Antique Black, since both are limestone and acid can etch the surface. If you pressure wash, keep the setting low and the nozzle moving.
Winter needs a little more thought. Salt residue shows more clearly on dark stone, so use de-icer sparingly and shovel with a plastic blade to avoid scratches. In spring, rinse the surface thoroughly to lift any salt film, let it dry, and reseal if water no longer beads.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which black stone is best for a patio?
It depends on the look you want: smooth and uniform (Kota Black), rustic and textured (Imperial Black), or in between (Antique Black). Compare samples wet and dry in daylight before choosing.
Do black stone patios get too hot?
Dark stone absorbs more sun than light stone, so it runs warmer. Many homeowners use black as a border and choose a lighter stone for pool decks.
Will black natural stone fade?
Some black stones lighten over time with sun and weather, Kota Black in particular. A colour-enhancing sealer helps keep the tone deep.
Can black stone be used around a pool?
Yes. It is popular as pool coping or a border, ideally with a textured finish for grip and lighter decking alongside.
Is black stone slippery when wet?
The finish matters more than the colour. Choose a natural cleft or textured finish for wet areas. Our guide to non-slip natural stone finishes explains the options.
How should I clean black natural stone?
Use a pH-neutral stone cleaner and a soft brush. Avoid acidic products, especially on limestone such as Kota Black and Antique Black, because acid can etch the surface.
Does black stone show salt marks?
Salt residue can show more on dark stone. Use de-icer sparingly, rinse it off in spring and keep the surface sealed.
